JST Sakura Science Program Report 2014

Japan-Asia Energy Research School in Kyushu Unviersity

Research and Education Center for Energy Materials, Devices, and Systems
Research and Education Center of Carbon Resources

Two research centers in Kyushu University held “Japan-Asia Energy Research School” in 2014. The program was supported by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) Sakura Exchange Program in Science. The period was from Dec. 4 to Dec. 24, 2014. Eight participants were nominated from Mahidol University (Thailand), National University of Mongolia (Mongolia), China University of Mining and Technology (China), and Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia). Two of them from Thailand were lecturers of Mahidol University, four were graduate students, and other two were undergraduate students. They had research experience in Kyushu University. The content was dependent on the participant. Two young researchers from Thailand performed research at dual research groups on polymer science and nano-technology, and visited several other groups for discussion on possible collaborations in future. Students from Mongolia and China joined a group to do the research on conversion of coal to energy, and performed fundamental experiments on this issue. Students from Indonesia studied the resource recycling. The research plans were prepared dependent on the demand of the participants.

Besides the research experiences, tours to see the facilities of Kyushu University were carried out in both Chikushi and Ito campus. Throughout the school, the participants had good discussions with professors and students of Kyushu University, which are a good starting point for further collaborations. For example, stimulated by this experience, one of the participants decided to try entrance examination of Kyushu University in near future.
